2007 TCG NATIONAL CONFERENCE: WOLE SOYINKA TO SPEAK

Playwright, poet, novelist and essayist Wole Soyinka will speak at the TCG National Conference June 7-9 in Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Nigerian-born, Nobel Prize-winning Soyinka has published more than 30 works, including the plays The Lion and the Jewel, King Baabu and Death and the King's Horseman. Soyinka's acclaimed second autobiography, You Must Set Forth at Dawn, was excerpted in American Theatre's March 2006 issue. Soyinka is professor emeritus in comparative literature at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, and an advisor to the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada. For the past two years he was a fellow of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute, Harvard University. TCG/ITI TRAVEL GRANTS

The latest round of TCG/International Theatre Institute travel grants, awarded to theatres or artists twice a year to support travel between Russia and Eastern Europe and the United States, went to seven groups. The grants consist of $2,500 to each individual or team, and are supported by the Trust for Mutual Understanding. Steve Bailey of Jump-Start Performance Co. in San Antonio, Tex., will observe at Divadlo z Pasaze in Slovakia. Ron Bieganski and Anita Evans of Chicago's Free Street Programs will travel to Teatr Brama in Poland. Natalia Fedorova of Moscow, Russia, will choreograph at Alaska's Perseverance Theatre. Desmar Guevara, Jorge Merced and Rosalba Rolon of Pregones Theater in Bronx, N.Y., will travel to Slovakia to collaborate with Flemish and Slovakian companies. Ashlin Halfnight, Emily Long and Melanie Sylvan of New York City will travel to Budapest to work with Merlin International Theatre and Hungarian National Theatre.
