American Business Lists Online

American Business Information supplies direct online access to 11,000,000 U.S. and Canadian business listings. Much of ABI's data appear on many commercial services, including a gateway to the direct service from NewsNet. Data comes from over 5,000 yellowpage telephone directories, businesses in white-page listings, annual reports, SEC filings, etc. ABI verifies the data with phone call checks. Company Profile reports provide name of owner or CEO, number of employees, sales volume, line of business, and contact information. ABI charges $6 for each report plus system charges. Searchers can also get mailing labels or printouts for $4 plus 25 cents per name and address. Counts of companies in market categories for statistical analysis are charged the base connect-time rates of $15/ connecthour. The gateway connection to NewsNet accesses the direct service through a menu-driven database guide divided into geographic categories -- U.S. Businesses, U.S. Manufacturers, Canadian Businesses -- and then type of information -- Business lists, counts, company profiles. The ABI service also provides TRW business credit reports for $29 each. In the near future they hope to add MetroMail's Peoplefinder file currently available on LEXIS/NEXIS, Information America, and direct from MetroMail's Metronet service.


DIALOG OnDisc Market Research Locator/Findex: The Worldwide Directory of Market Research Reports, Studies and Surveys from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts carries abstracts of reports from over 700 U.S. and non-U.S. publishers. The 17,000 abstracts of market, industry, and consumer studies, market audits, and company reports doubles the citations appearing in the print publication of the same title. The file costs $800 annually and updates quarterly. Public and academic libraries subscribe for $480. In dial-up, the file appears as DIALOG File 196.

Frost and Sullivan Research Services offers its Frost and Sullivan Market Intelligence database of market research reports and industry analyses on DIALOG as File 765. The studies cover most areas of high technological development, consumer products, and industrial technology. Each report includes market share, sales forecasts, market trends, vendor profiles, competitive analyses, and market segment analysis. Coverage extends back through 1993 and the file updates monthly. There is a 120-day lag time before reports go online. The Help News 765 command lists recent studies. Searching costs $60/connecthour plus $16 per full record. The file is also available on KR Data-Star (FSFS).

Law and Government

Court TV, the legal cable television service from Courtroom Television Network, produces an educational multimedia law magazine for the public called Focus. It combines graphics, maps, photos, animation, and audio clips covering legal issues and information. Each issue includes a featured issue, case spotlight, backgrounder, opinion gallery for readers, "The Law And You" legal information, and a law-based game. Online subscribers can now download Focus from Court TV's Law Center on America Online (Keyword: Court TV), CompuServe (GO Edrive), or Prodigy (Jump Court TV), at no additional charge. Cable system operators can receive the magazine on floppy disk.

Legi-Slate has an Internet Gopher Service that provides full-text and status information for federal legislation and regulations since 1993. The full dial-up service carries deeper archives, offers more full text instead of indexing, and uses more powerful search features than the gopher files. Legislative information includes bill overviews and outlooks, current status, description, Congressional Research Service bill digest, names of co-sponsors, lists of bill text versions released, full text of the latest version. major action and all action status reports, scheduled committee and floor actions, committee reports filed, roll call votes, analysis of public laws amended or repealed by bills, counterpart or companion bills, and citations to remarks in the Congressional Record, as well as articles in the Washington Post, National Journal, and Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report. …
