Ten years after the breakup of Ma Bell, phone companies are going through a transformation that will make divestiture seem easy by comparison. When Judge Greene divided Bell Telephone into regional operating companies, the new companies had to learn to do business differently. But at least they were still in the same business - delivering phone service.

Today they want to take advantage of digital technology to deliver not just voice messages, but many other forms of communication as well. Phone companies still want your phone business, but they also want to transmit your fax, deliver your cable TV, carry the signal for your pager, send your computer's data from place to place, and provide other services they haven't even thought of yet.

These changes are exciting and challenging enough on their own. But they are intensified by fierce competition in the whole telecommunication industry. Phone companies are entering markets crowded with competitors that already deliver many of the new products and services. …
