Article excerpt

G.K. Hall & Co. has released Athena: Classical Mythology on CD-ROM, an extensive CD-ROM database on classical mythology for users of all levels. This ground-breaking interactive tool provides 1200 myth summaries 20 full-text translations of major classical works, pop-up definitions of names of all mythic figures, genealogical tables, and approximately 500 images of the classical gods, goddesses, and other mythic figures and scenes. Athena is reportedly the only reference and full-text database of Greek and Roman mythology on CD-ROM.

The myths of ancient Greece and Rome are rife with symbolism, drama, and beauty, making the stories sources of inspiration for writers through the ages. Finding a comprehensive compendium of these myths, however, is often difficult and time-consuming. Most compilations are lacking either in quantity or quality. Athena changes all that.

Virtually all well-known myths are represented in Athena, bringing a wealth of information together in one source. Full-text translations include Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Virgil's Aeneid, Sophocles' Oedipus cycle, Aeschylus' Agamemnon, and Hesiod's Theogony. Some of the more frequently studied myths summarized in Athena include the Birth of Aphrodite, Orpheus and Eurydice, the founding of Rome, the Trojan War, Theseus and the Minotaur, and Jason and the Argonauts' quest for the Golden Fleece.

Athena provides instant access to specific information. Enter a key word, a character name, a literary work, or the name of a classical author, and within seconds Athena displays a name definition, genealogical table, myth summary, or full-text translation featuring the person or subject requested, in language that is clear, concise, and easy to understand. …
