'New York Sportscene' Tackles Statewide Athletics

Editor in chief Mark Sosna is confident that if he builds it, sports fans will come to New York Sportscene, a 125,000-circulation monthly focusing on all sports in the state, professional and amateur. The new four-color glossy also provides in-depth coverage of the personalities, events and business behind the state's expansive sports industry, from Giants football to college basketball to the Professional Bowlers Tour. "It doesn't seem like an ingenious idea to me, but apparently no one has had the determination or drive to do this," Sosna says.

Maybe others have been deterred by the intense competition from the daily sports pages, with their extensive coverage of the Yankees, Knicks, Mets and Rangers. But Sosna says New, York Sportscene will fill a niche newspapers can't. "Dailies focus more on game stories," he says. "But we have the ability to run color photos, and we can be more thorough."

Nor is Sosna worried about fan fillout from the ongoing baseball strike. "In a sense, the replacement players they'll be using in baseball will give us more stories to write about," he says. "With sports, there's always something happening."

New York Sportscene promises to leave no sport unturned, particularly those events that get little press elsewhere, including the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, Belmont horse racing, PGA tours, karate and soccer. …
