CATEGORY: DOWN SYNDROME

SC has a 19-year-old daughter with Down syndrome. Her husband is in the Air Force and getting ready to retire. They are starting to look for a group home for their daughter but are finding it hard to find the right one for her. They are looking for a listing of group homes and information about how to go about finding one.

It is not simply a matter of finding a group home, as you must consider how you will fund her placement and a state/area that you will enjoy in your retirement if you are leaving an area you know.

Get to know your MR Case Manager so that he/she can present your case when openings come up.

If there are private programs you might consider a placement with, find out the cost and see if they will take Medicaid waivers as some in the area do not. …
