HELO Plans to Meet at NALEO Conference

As the National Association of Latino and Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) plans to convene its 12th Annual Conference this year, June 22 - 24, 1995 in Austin, Tex., NLC's caucus group, the Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO), is making arrangements to hold a meeting of its Board of Directors and members in conjunction with this event.

This year's NALEO theme, "At Mid-Decade: Latinos, the Contract and the Future," will help participants examine issues such as affirmative action, immigration policy, the Contract with America, naturalization efforts, Latino political empowerment, and more. Invited keynote speakers are President Bill Clinton, President Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico, and Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole.

According to Arturo Vargas, NALEO's newly appointed executive director, "We expect this year's conference to be our most exciting. It is more important that ever for Latinos to come together and assess where we are in terms of political and civic empowerment - to celebrate our gains, but also, to plan for a better future.'

HELO President Thomas Morales, Jr., Councilmember, Avondale, Ariz., states, 'It is important for HELO members to attend and support this NALEO event. We can gain a great deal from participating and networking with our fellow officials and colleagues. We can also make a significant contribution to the overall efforts to address the important political issues that this conference will discuss. I encourage HELO members to attend this meeting. …
