THE MIRROR-IMAGE "A" ON THE HEADSTOCK AND the walrus-moustache bridge announce from across the room that the RDSC is an Alvarez. It sports simple but tasteful cosmetics and the cool pickguard (coupled with the unique bridge) prevent it from blending in with the acoustic-electric crowd. The top, back, and sides are very clean, as are the nut and bridge. Ditto for the inside of the RD8C, which is neat and tidy. All of this makes it a bit bizarre that the heel of the neck is coated with a brown stain that looks out of place.

The first chord I strummed produced a brilliant, clear sound with great definition. There is a dimensionality to the tone that is quite rare in this price range and the high end is particularly sweet on this guitar. It showed up with a good setup that was easy to play but not so low that it buzzed or sacrificed bass. The sound in the room was lively and musical, with great string-to-string separation. …
