City Officials Aim to Fight Repeal of Assault Weapons Ban

City officials are gearing up to fight back against new legislation that would repeal the NLC-supported Assault Weapons Ban law and preempt state and local gun control laws. The measure, HR 1488, was introduced in the House on April 7, 1995.

Action on the bill is expected to be fast and controversial. Hearings have been held on various aspects of the gun control issue, with an additional hearing on the bill, the Citizen's Protection From Violent Crime Act of 1995, scheduled for May 2. A floor vote could take place anytime thereafter.

The Senate is expected to act on its version of anti-crime legislation, HR 3, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Improvement Act of 1995 by the middle or end of May. Action on the Assault Weapons repeal bill is expected to take place upon the conclusion of debate over S.3. Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kans.) has promised proponents of the repeal measure that the bill will be sent to President Clinton by the end of the summer. …
