In 1993, the first year R&D Magazine offered videos for winners of its R&D 100, Self-Cleaning Environments bought a video on its automated restroom. The company showed the video to Michael Eisner, CEO of Disney who liked the concept so much that the restroom is on exhibit at Epcot Center. Telemarketers now use this anecdote to sell the six-minute videos to other winners. The price is $4,775 - much less than it would cost the individual winners to do it themselves. The standard cost is about $1,000 a minute for a good quality video. So the companies get the benefit of R&D's team of video and sound people. All the winners are together for the awards ceremony making it possible to gang interviews and save money on a TV crew. Another way to keep costs down is to have a set format. R&D's format: 1) A standard opening giving the history and background of the R&D 100. 2) Interview with the winner at the Museum of Science and Industry, talking about the product. …
