A busy programme of recent events at NZIM Central included a successful breakfast meeting with corporate anthropologist Michael Henderson, who discussed the gains organisations can make when they learn how to view their company culture as an anthropologist would.

Author and co author of a number of books on culture and values, Michael is a director of Values at Work, a consulting organisation specialising in company culture and values.

Under the heading of "Eight to the power of one: A business case for culture" highlights of his presentation included:

* How to successfully define and understand culture

* The business case for culture (the sceptics buster!)

* The seven deadly mistakes organisations regularly make with culture

* New and emerging culture trends for business.

Michael says organisational culture has eight times more influence on performance variation than strategy, citing UK research that showed organisational strategy accounted for 2% of performance variability while organisational culture accounted for 17% of performance variability. In other words, even the best business strategy in the world will under-perform without a supporting and aligned organisational culture. …
