Eighth Annual Photos of the Year

There was no Katrina, no Tsunami, not even an Olympics, and the Iraq war grew even more hazardous to cover. Still, the past year produced the usual high number of amazing press photographs -- and a record number of entries in Editor & Publisher's annual Photos of the Year contest. We are happy to present, in a special gallery here the 17 winners in four categories (spanning four circulation groups), selected from hundreds of entries. Included are all of the photos from the multiple-image category, as well as a dozen honorable mentions. The gallery is best viewed using Internet Explorer. There you will also find an audio interview with our grand-prize winner, Bill Greene of The Boston Globe. He earns $1,000, as well as a new Canon EOS-1D Mark III camera courtesy of our contest's sponsor, Canon.

Greene, 51, has been with the Globe for 22 years as a staff photographer. Before that, he worked at The Patriot-Ledger in Quincy, Mass. Twice he has been named Photographer of the Year in the National Press Photographers Association's Pictures of the Year competition (1987 and 1998). He has received Photographer of the Year honors from the Boston Press Photographers Association 10 times. …
