THOUGH CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES have consistently said allowing gays to marry would defile the marriages of mainstream Americans, Elizabeth Edwards dared to disagree. "I don't know why somebody else's marriage has anything to do with me," she stated rather bluntly at a San Francisco pride event in June. "I'm completely comfortable with gay marriage."

That simple pronouncement set off a spate of articles in gay and mainstream papers about how she had "split" with her presidential candidate husband, John, over same-sex marriage. But the real shock for most of Middle America was the concept that committed gay couples actually don't threaten the institution of marriage.

Elizabeth Edwards isn't just a champion for the movement; she's arguably the most likable presence on the campaign trail. Not only are we drawn to her disarming candor--a rare jewel in politics--but we also relate to her as a cancer patient turned survivor turned patient again; as a mother of young children; as a woman who survived the loss of her child; as an intellect every bit as capable as her husband's; and as someone who genuinely appears to have achieved the lifelong love affair for which we all strive. …
