I ADORE MY JOB BECAUSE IT CONJURES more surreal moments than Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, and Marcel Duchamp could yank out of a marshmallow giraffe. The latest in a series of strange and blissful events is occurring right now: 10:30 pm, Friday, October 12, 2007. I've just left the stage of the Great American Music Hall, where ten brilliant guitarists have mesmerized a full house since 8 pro, and I'm sitting in one of the dressing rooms deep under the club. I'm facing Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt, Elliot Easton, Greg Howe, and Shrapnel Records owner (and former GP columnist) Mike Varney. It's almost the end of Guitar Player's Guitar Hero 2007 competition, and, as the event's panel of judges, the six guitar stars are tasked with choosing the three best players of the night--one of which will be the GH07 champion. I get to listen to them debate the finer points of guitarcraft. I am one lucky dude.

Earlier, I got to hang with the show's host, Brendon Small. He's the co-creator of Adult Swim's smash Metalocalypse series, and his soundtrack to the show, Dethalbum, just hit number 21 on the Billboard charts that day. The buzz around this guy is tremendous, and I'm--gasp--working with him. I am one very lucky doggy. I also got to watch Nuno Bettencourt demo Digidesign's new ampemulation plug-in, Eleven, with a thrilling performance, and then go "off script" and invite Greg Howe onstage to jam. (It's nice to know that rock and roll can still launch a few anarchy missiles from time to time. …
