Bach's gamba sonatas are mainly recorded by gamba players, such as Savall, Kuijken, Bylsma, and Boothby, while "normal" cellists are more interested in the solo suites. (One of the few exceptions has been Mischa Maisky (piano Martha Argerich, DGG)). It is understandable in a way, for the gamba suites are not superficially attractive and technically rather thankless. Nonetheless, they contain a great deal of remarkable music. Petr Nouzovsky and Monika Knoblochova (see CM 3/06) are musicians still little known at home and unknown abroad. They are young, they know exactly what they want to achieve, and they are highly erudite on the theoretical historical side as well. Listen to their performances and I guarantee that after a time they will start to fascinate you and "draw you in". …
