We are very confident about the credentials of the companies that have won Marketing's Agency of the Year. Set out in this supplement are the best and most admired agencies in the UK.

This year will be best remembered as one in which trust and accountability played their part in almost everything from politics and party funding to banking and TV phone-in competitions.

To reflect this, Marketing's agencies of the year have been forced to prove their accountability. We put them through our toughest and most robust benchmarks yet, making them demonstrate their worth in several criteria before enlisting a panel of 18 independent judges from all areas of the industry to make the final decision.

Being a leading agency is about high performance on every level. We asked the panel to judge and score each shortlisted agency accordingly, taking into account business growth; creativity; leadership and overall management; understanding and contribution to client business; 360 degs thinking; and innovation. Our last but by no means least important criterion was social responsibility.

Agencies are well rehearsed in proving their worth by effectiveness and accountability, but demand will gather pace for answers on where they stand on all issues to do with responsibility. …
