In the process of putting together this month's Dossier on glacial retreat around the world (page 46), I was surprised to discover that there are actually people out there who believe that the world's glaciers aren't disappearing. Numerous climate-change-sceptic blogs and websites cite examples of glaciers that are, in fact, growing, as well as studies suggesting that certain groups of glaciers are holding their own, as evidence that this whole global warming thing is a load of bunk.

It's a quite glorious piece of logical perversity, but the rest of my research made it abundantly clear that, sadly, these people couldn't be more wrong. The evidence to contradict their wild claims is just so incredibly overwhelming. For example, the latest report by the World Glacier Monitoring Service, which has been monitoring 108 glaciers in nine mountain ranges around the world for the past 25 years, described the highest loss in glacier mass it has ever recorded.

And the growing glaciers are easily explained, with most of the explanations pointing to global warming itself being the culprit. …
