On a Friday in October, when I arrived at the Los Angeles studio of celebrity photographer Kwaku Alston, the mood was electric. This wasn't just another cover shoot. This was Mary J. Blige, the queen of hip-hop soul, sitting down with America's LGBT newsmagazine for the first time. I was dropping by to welcome her to our pages.

We didn't have a conversation, just a quick and courteous exchange. But even as she sat immobile in a makeup chair, Mary J. Blige engaged me in a way I liked-quiet, direct, and deep. She brings those same qualities to her cover interview with Ernest Hardy (page 42). Whether she's talking about AIDS, her LGBT journey, or the joyful music in her new release, Growing Pains, this woman is worth listening to.

Facing the facts and moving forward-one of Blige's certifiable talents--is atheme in this issue. As we approach World Aids Day 2007, a vaccine continues to elude us, but we're making headway with microbicides. There's progress in the policy-wonk world of insurance, though the route has been circuitous.
