Everywhere I turn these days I keep running into very young people playing very old styles of country music--stuff that pre-dates the country music industry. Old Crow Medicine Show is at the vanguard of the trend, and so is singer-songwriter Adrienne Young.

Young, a north Florida native, is blazing trails with her music and with the way that she presents it. Room to Grow is her third album released by her own company, and the first that she has also produced on her own. In addition Young uses her albums and personal appearances to promote the cause of grass-roots, sustainable agriculture. For instance, part of the proceeds from Room to Grow will go to the American Community Gardens Association.

It's a back-to-the-future cause that jibes well with her music. Room to Grow is more produced, and more pop, than her previous efforts. But even its slickest numbers are grounded in a very old tradition by Young's own old-time claw-hammer banjo playing--a style she learned from one of the guys in Old Crow. …
