Major Paper Produces McCain/Lobbyist Story: But It's 'Wash Post,' Not 'NYT'

You may remember the reports earlier this month that associates and lawyers of Sen. John McCain were furiously pleading with The New York Times to hold off on a major article probing his ties to lobbyists -- either because some of the charges weren't true or the thing would unfairly appear just before the vote in Iowa. No major Times pieces on this subject has appeared since then, but today a front-pager showed up in the rival Washington Post.

Here is how the piece, by Jeffrey Birnbaum and John Solomon opens. Its heading reads: "McCain's Unlikely Ties to K Street: 32 Lobbyists Bundle Funds for Longtime Critic."

McCain's appearance at the Deer Valley event, arranged by J.P. Morgan Vice Chairman James B. Lee Jr., a top McCain fundraiser, put him in a room with the chief executives of companies such as General Electric, Xerox and Sony.
