This is the first international release of the 1978 Unitel/ORF film version of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, based on the 1976 production designed and directed by Filippo Sanjust for the Vienna State Opera that's still in use. While sets and costumes (also by Sanjust) are dated by today's standards, the cast is by and large quite solid.

Many seem to respond to the classic restraint and poise soprano Gundala Janowitz brings to the title role, underscored by her expressionless acting, but I find her somewhat bloodless compared to the interpretations of Jessye Norman or Deborah Voight. Rene Kollo, on the other hand, is appropriately heroic and deals with the punishing, high-lying lines of Bacchus's music with relative ease. Walter Berry is exceptional as the Music Master, as is Trudeliese Schmidt as his protegee, the Composer.

The vocal highlight of this DVD, however, is coloratura soprano Edita Gruberova in an early performance of Zerbinetta, one of the great successes and most-frequent roles of her career. …
