Eu/us : Damning Report on CIA Adopted by Meps

MEPs have strongly condemned the United States' anti-terrorist operations in Europe. The US intelligence agency, the CIA, has been 'directly responsible' for 'illegal seizure, removal, abduction and detention of terrorist suspects on the territory of member states, accession and candidate countries', a European Parliament investigating committee decided on 12 June. The report, adopted by 25 votes to 14 with 7 abstentions, will be submitted to the 3-6 July plenary for endorsement.

The vote was essentially a victory for the left, with Socialist, Green, GUE-NGL and Liberal MEPs all backing it. The centre-right EPP-ED was split, with some voting against and some, including the CIA temporary committee chair Carlos Coelho (Portugal), abstaining. The right-wing UEN and Eurosceptic Independence and Democracy groups are believed to have voted against.

Afterwards, committee vice chair Sarah Ludford (United Kingdom) said the report's conclusions were 'based on solid and well-researched evidence'. By contrast, the EPP's Jas Gawronski (Italy) called the report imbalanced. He insisted 'the committee has revealed no new important facts and does not allow the conclusion that there have been a large number of extraordinary rendition' cases'. The EPP failed to get a series of amendments passed that would have labelled the claims as 'allegations' and not established facts.

The report says the CIA has violated fundamental rights under international law. …
