Energy Piebalgs Inaugurates : Energy Community

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs inaugurated on 17 November the Energy Community - a new initiative that aims to extend the EU's internal energy market to the south-east European region. The energy ministers of 34 countries participating in the Energy Community agreed at their first meeting in Skopje upon concrete national road maps outlining the current status, the coming tasks and the responsible institutions of each country for the development of the energy market. At the meeting, the current members of the Energy Community unanimously decided to grant observer status in the organisation to Moldova, Norway, Turkey and Ukraine.

"The European Union's voice is clear: we will act to bring our relations with key countries onto a legal basis so as to reinforce our common interests," said Commissioner Piebalgs commenting on the aim of the new organisation.

"We want the European Union to share the benefits of the internal energy market as well as to underpin our commitment to our partners, and secure energy supplies," he added.

The task of the Energy Community is to organise the relations between its members and provide for a legal and economic framework to create a wider European energy market. Its main goals are to create a stable and regulatory market framework capable of attracting investment and a single regulatory space for trade. The organisation's aim is also to enhance security of supply, to improve the environmental situation and to develop electricity and gas market competition on a broader geographical scale. …
