Eu/kosovo : Mep: Independence with Conditions Is Only Solution for Kosovo

With the UN negotiation process on the future status of Kosovo speeding up following the presentation of Martti Ahtisaari's plan to the contact group on 26 January, the European Parliament decided to express its views on this hot topic. "Kosovo should have the right to ask for independence. The only solution for Kosovo is independence, although with certain limits," said Joost Lagendijk (Greens/EFA, the Netherlands), introducing the main conclusions of his draft report on the future of Kosovo and the role of the EU after a final decision on its future is taken.

During the EP Foreign Affairs Committee's first discussion on the report on 30 January, Lagendijk firmly stated that he wanted the word independence' to be used. Referring to Martti Ahtisaari's plan which, according to diplomatic sources, does not mention independence, Lagendijk reminded MEPs that they do not have to be constrained by diplomatic correctness. "We are not diplomats. We are politicians. We must not be afraid to use independence as a word describing Kosovo's future status," said Lagendijk. In his opinion, the EP and other EU bodies should express themselves very clearly on this subject. "The EU has to speak with one voice on Kosovo," said Lapo Pistelli (ALDE, Italy) supporting Lagendijk's point of view. He appealed to the EU to prepare one common position to Kosovo's potential request for recognition.
