Eu/russia : Warsaw Calls for Tough Approach to Russia at Mafra Summit

Poland, which has been affected by the Russian ban on its meat and plant products for almost two years, is urging the Portuguese EU Presidency to adopt a firm position towards Russia at the upcoming EU-Russia summit on 26 October in Mafra (Portugal). "We are not fully satisfied with the soft stance adopted by the Portuguese Presidency in the mandate for the summit," said Poland's Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga at a press conference after discussing preparations for the EU-Russia high-level meeting on 15 October in Luxembourg. Although featured in the agenda of the meeting, the "discussions" with Russia's representatives on the embargo on Polish imports imposed by Moscow in November 2005 are not regarded by the Presidency as a separate item. The Presidency only "expects" that "discussions" in general would "encourage continued efforts to help find a solution to Russia's bans on Polish imports".

Warsaw believes that the EU should not give its final assent to Russia's accession to the World Trade Organisation as long as the ban is not waived by Moscow. …
