Eu-Russia Summit : Putin Calls on Eu to Show Patience over Kosovo Status Process

Russia's President Vladimir Putin remains unmoved by calls from the EU and the US urging for progress on the issue of Kosovo's status. Instead, he says that the international community should show more patience. "Why is it necessary to further shake the foundations of international law by encouraging and promoting separatism in Europe? Would it not be better to try to be patient?" said Putin at a joint press conference with Portugal's President Anibal Cavaco Silva on 25 October in Lisbon.

Unlike the EU and the US, Russia does not want to apply any deadlines to direct talks between Serbia and Kosovo, which were re-launched at the beginning of September for a period of 120 days. Moscow insists that, if agreement were not to be reached before that date, the talks should continue. According to Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's Permanent Representative to the EU, such negotiations should go on until both sides agree to a compromise proposal. …
