Services of General Interest : Sgi Essential to All Member States, Ceep Says

The European Centre of Enterprises with Public Participation and of Enterprises of General Economic Interest (CEEP), which held its 17th congress on 7 and 8 September in Bucharest, Romania, has published a declaration, particularly on the EU's enlargement and the issue of Services ofGeneral Interest.

SOCIAL DIALOGUE

"The scheduled accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the European Union is far more than a question of meeting the Copenhagen criteria," the CEEP declaration says. All relevant institutions and organisations in the EU25 as well as in Romania and Bulgaria have to coordinate and implement several joint processes in order to immediately and fully integrate both countries in the institutional, economic, social and cultural whole of the Union. CEEP, the European cross-sectoral social partner representing public employers in Europe, is convinced that social dialogue is one of the most effective means to reach this integration. Autonomous social dialogue is a guarantee for market-oriented and fair living and working conditions in Europe.

HELP THROUGH SOLIDARITY

"Services of general interest are essential to all, rich and poor, old' and new' member states, as well as to the future of the European Union as a whole," the declaration adds. "High-quality services of general interest are indispensable for any economic and social progress in Europe. Their proper operation is a condition for Europe to use the whole potential of its enlargement in a globalised economy. …
