The nation's first conference on analytics was held Oct. 25 in San Diego. The 1-day conference, The Forum on Analytics: From Data to Decision, was hosted by the San Diego Software Industry Council. The morning sessions were devoted to business case studies and how different kinds of businesses are using analytics; the afternoon sessions covered developing analytics trends in the industry.

"The top two industry sectors that are using data analytics are military and monetary," said Bob Slapin, executive director of the San Diego Software Industry Council. Both of these industry sectors were concentrated in the San Diego area and the analytics cluster-related sectors grew up around these sectors accordingly. "Companies need analytics to examine data and make their key decisions," said Slapin. "The value of using analytics is starting to catch on at more and more companies."

"Analytics has a long history in different branches," according to Joe Milana, chief scientist at Fair Isaac. "In 1956, Fair Isaac introduced the use of statistics to its business," and it has been using analytics ever since to support corporate decision making and to maintain a competitive edge. …
