BT Secures London 2012 Telecoms Tie

BT has finalised a deal to become the official telecoms partner and fifth tier-one domestic partner of the 2012 Olympic Games.

There had been mounting industry speculation that the telecoms firm had been battling with Orange for the coveted package, but BT has now secured the exclusive deal.

It had also been rumoured that the telecoms category would be split between the two companies. However, this now seems unlikely as BT will not be keen for its rivals to have any official association with the Games.

The deal is a coup for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) because the evolving nature of the telecoms industry makes category definition more complicated than in other sectors.

Under the terms of the partnership package, BT will provide the telecoms infrastructure across the Olympic venues. In return, it will be given category exclusive rights to use the London 2012 logo in its communications activity as well as opportunities for corporate hospitality. …
