PAULINE'S PICKS: The 'Northwest Herald' Looks into A Local Cancer Cluster

Today's Pick is a tremendous project. The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, Illinois put together a huge project about a cancer cluster in nearby McCullom Lake. It's rooted in a lawsuit filed by several families, all of whom had members who were stricken by a rare form of brain cancer. It's long, but once you start watching it it's hard to turn it off.

The lawsuit claims that two companies, Rohm & Haas and Modine, allowed volatile chemicals to seep into the drinking water of the quiet village. It's very much like the case that the Erin Brockovich film was based on, and just as intriguing.

The project is a series of videos and print stories that takes viewers through the whole case, first meeting the families, then the attorneys and finally the health officials who botched studies about whether or not there were questionable substances in the water.

As I was watching the project, the managing editor contacted me and told me that one of the companies accused of contaminating water and causing the alleged cancer cluster settled a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of the cancer patients. …
