ACB Expands Scope of Business Information

One measure of a business trade association's effectiveness is its ability to deliver useful, timely and reliable information to it members.

Not only has America's Community Bankers worked hard at achieving that end, but it also has gone a significant step further: developing and packaging often hard-to-get business information of value to other depository institutions as well as ACB's traditional savings and community banking members.

Several existing and soon to be published ACB books and manuals provide solid evidence of this approach. These works include the following:

* The Standard Accounting Manual for Financial Institutions. Highlights of this accounting resource include general ledger entries for all types of transactions, cross-references between the appropriate charts of accounts and Call Reports or Thrift Financial Reports, and explanations of the purposes and proper uses of each account.

Other features include how-to examples of various accounting applications and current thinking on the latest rulings of the Financial Accounting Standards Board.

With its looseleaf, three-ring format, the manual will accommodate future updates and changes. In the works: a supplement that will include the latest guidance on accounting for mortgage servicing rights.

* The Job Description Guidebook for Financial Institutions. The simplified model language in this ACB publication describes the duties and responsibilities for 168 positions in a hypothetical institution. Although most institutions have substantially fewer functions, institutions of all sizes will find the guidebook's job descriptions easily adaptable for their own needs.

The positions described range from compliance officer and personal banker to ATM coordinator and trust investment analyst.
