Your Best Business Partner in the Mohawk Valley

The Mohawk Valley Library association, one of the 23 public library systems in New York, received a grant to set up and organize three small business information centers in three member libraries. Called "Your Best Business Partner: Your Public Library," the grant was supported by federal Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) Title 1 funds from the New York State Library, and it provided materials and equipment, including multimedia workstations, for each of the three centers.

"We are trying to convince, hopefully wisely, our member libraries to see themselves as small businesses and to market their services accordingly," said Patrice M. Hollman, outreach coordinator.

The Mohawk Valley Library Association has been working with the chamber of commerce and local planning boards to develop a network of referral agencies that can help market and publicize the new services. Libraries that are chamber of commerce members have the opportunity to piggyback on chamber mailings. Also, when the chamber does a "How to start your own small business" or similar workshop, the participating libraries can do a presentation on the resources available at the business information center. …
