Goodbye to Four of the Greatest Generation

The closing weeks of 2007 saw the passing of four gay pioneers whose reach spanned music, literature, history, and politics. With the loss of these influential crusaders, the LGBT community's own "greatest generation" grew that much smaller. Lamenting their loss, gay rights attorney and activist Bill Dobbs sees their departure as a symbol of the movement's softening. He says, "These people were working for liberation, something more than just the same, which is what equality has come to mean."

Allan Berube, 61, gay historian, died of complications from two stomach ulcers, December 11 in Liberty, N.Y. The winner of a MacArthur Foundation genius grant, Berube also won the 1990 Lambda Literary Award for Coming Out Under Fire, which told of the gay men and women who served in World War II.
