Frank to Address Congressional City Conference

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) will speak to delegates at the Congressional City Conference. A strong advocate for affordable housing and reform of the housing finance system, a top legislative priority for NLC, Frank will speak during the general session on Tuesday afternoon, March 11.

Frank has worked closely with NLC in the past year on issues surrounding mortgage finance reform and the current home foreclosure crisis affecting families, cities and towns.

As chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank sponsored and managed several significant housing bills to passage in the House last year that are now awaiting Senate action. Frank's legislation to reform the mortgage process and end predatory lending practices passed the House in an unusually large bipartisan vote.


In addition, Frank ushered through the House legislation to reform and modernize the Federal Housing Administration and housing finance giants Fannie Mac and Freddie Mac. Those bills would help new homebuyers avoid predatory loans and help struggling homeowners find options to save their homes from foreclosure. Last year, Frank also led the passage of a bill to establish a National Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

This year, Frank remains committed to fixing America's broken housing finance system. He also has indicated he will address the recent turmoil in the bond insurance market, which is impacting the costs of municipal bond transactions for cities, and will lead an effort to improve and reauthorize the Community Reinvestment Act. …
