Throngs of librarians and library-related vendors flocked to the city of Philadelphia, host of the American Library Association's 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting held from Jan. 11 to 14. A steady stream of attendees stopped by exhibitor booths and gathered brochures, bags, and giveaways in the sprawling Philadelphia Convention Center, which was the home base for exhibits, meetings, sessions, and events. Additional sessions and meetings were convened in neighboring hotels to accommodate the overflow from the convention center.

According to Karen Muller, librarian and knowledge management specialist at ALA, the final numbers are the proof of the pudding: The turnout consisted of 10,533 librarians and 3,068 exhibitors for a 2008 total of 13,061 compared to the 2007 Midwinter Meeting in Seattle with 9,256 librarians and 2,974 exhibitors for a 2007 total of 12,230. Although the ALA Meeting Guide was reportedly thicker than ever, the threat of a winter storm in the mid-Atlantic may have curtailed a few from venturing out to the convention center. Several exhibitors commented that turnout was good but not as lively as in years' past, but some credited the girth of the convention center with dispersing the crowds effectively throughout. …
