Exclusive: Our Monthly Report on Top 30 Newspaper Sites -- Big Gains Reported for Nearly All!

February was a very good month for the top 30 newspaper Web sites with all but three making gains in traffic year over year.

Perhaps it's the political primary season? Whatever the reason, many sites experienced massive double-digit growth, according to new data from Nielsen Online (owned by E&P's parent company).

The Wall Street Journal jumped 75%. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution increased more than 100%.

Philly.com? Up 77%.

Newsday's online traffic soared 91%.

Three Web sites experienced losses. The San Diego Union-Tribune was down about 7% and the Miami Herald dropped about the same. The Houston Chronicle's Web site took more of a hit, down 18%.

Below is the complete custom list of the top 30 newspaper Web sites provided by Nielsen Online. The percent change compares February 2008 uniques with February 2007 uniques. February of last year had one extra day, but according to Nielsen, that should make only a slight difference. Also keep in mind there are several reasons why traffic fluctuates, including news events.
