Neil Armfield's splendidly evocative production of Tristan und Isolde made an impressive debut in Perth early in November, with Canadian Alan Woodrow in the male title role. Originally staged in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House in 1990, it transferred effectively to the historic, magnificently restored His Majesty's Theatre in Perth, although Brian Thomson's plastic platform of a set was somewhat cramped on the small stage of the venerable theatre.

Mounted by West Australian Opera on the eve of its 40th anniversary year, the undoubted highlight of the long evening was Susan Bullock's superb Isolde, relatively hot on the heels of her equally impressive Brunnhilde in the Toronto Ring lastSeptember. Not only did she sing strongly and well, she also infused her performance with an intense adherence to the detail of the libretto, consistently bringing to life what can, in lesser hands, sometimes seem to be dull and very long passages of text. …
