Canadian soprano Jane Archibald recently signed a Fest contract with the Vienna State Opera to perform three major roles (Musetta, Susanna and the Queen of the Night) over the next two seasons. As part of this contract, she was also expected to understudy other roles, including Sophie in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. When the original soprano withdrew from three scheduled performances, the talented trouper had less than a month to prepare one of the most echt-Viennese roles for a fastidious Viennese public. Fortunately, Archibald is a quick study, and she sailed through the performance (Dec. 7) with both security and style. Her silvery voice is well suited to the role, and one looks forward to hearing her interpretation mature in the future.

While there was considerable disappointment with the cancellation of Latvian mezzo Elina Garanca in the role of Octavian, her replacement--German mezzo DanielaSindram--was nothing short of sensational. American soprano Deborah Voigt, who made her debut as the Marschallin last season in Berlin, was making her Vienna debut in the role with these three performances. …
