BUBL Resources in Economics and Finance

Article excerpt

This month we look at the economics section of the BUBL Subject Tree (URL:http://www.bubl.bath.ac.uk/BUB L/Economics). You can find it by following the Subject Tree links from the BUBL home page if you are using a Web browser or the Lynx option on BUBL (URL:http://www.bubl.bath.ac .uk/BUBL/home.html). If you are using gopher, there is a gopher section on economics URL:gopher://bubl.bath. ac.uk:7070/11/Link/Tree/Economics). You can find it by simply following the Subject Tree links from the BUBL gopher home page.

In some subjects, such as computing, a wealth of Internet resources appeared almost overnight, while in other areas, such as economics and finance, the volume of quality resources was slower to appear but is now growing steadily. The economics section of the BUBL WWW and Gopher Subject Tree has over 150 resources, several of which are themselves extensive collections. In addition to the economics, BUBL has sections on accounting, banking, and statistics that have resources on related topics. The aim of the collection in the economics section is to provide resources of relevance to teaching and research, rather than purely commercial resources. This is BUBL policy and is reflected throughout the service.

Sites of General Interest

There are some particularly good general collections of resources in economics and finance. The Business and Economics Web Server at Nijenrode University in the Netherlands. (URL: http://www.nijenrode.nl/nbr/) stands out as one of the best all purpose sites for business and economics. Navigation is made easier as the site is divided into linked sections that include accounting, finance, economics and banking, human resource management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and international business, as well as publications and working papers.

Another excellent site with an emphasis on banking and finance is the KiwiClubWeb Server (URL:http: //kiwiclub.bus.utexas.edu/finance/kiwi server/kiwiserver.html). Not from "down under" but from the University of Texas, it provides lecture notes and links to international banking and financial resources. Links to individual banks are included, and it also provides links to stock exchanges and many other financial resources.[Mu] Bill Goffe's Resources for Economists (URL:http://wuecon) is a first-rate reference work on economics. Available in both hypertext and ASCII, this extensive resource is frequently updated. For information on global trends and developments, the World Bank (URL:http://www.worldbank.org) has been developing information resources, several of which are listed in the economics section.

Many sites have sprung up offering current information on stock prices. MIT has developed an Experimental Stock Market Data site, which provides the previous day's closing prices, general market news and one-year graphs of historical prices. Another extensive site is the Yahoo Stock Market Information and Resources (URL:http://www. yahoo.com/Economy/Markets_and_Inv estments/Stocks/), which has links to sites around the world.

Research, Teaching, and Learning

In addition to the general-interest sites above, there are other good sites for research in the areas of economics and finance. One outstanding resource is the Financial Economics World Wide Web Server, or FinWeb (URL:http: //riskweb.bus.utexas. …
