Until the 1980s only a few companies existed to serve the needs of pen elitists. But as our disposable income rose, so did our appetite for luxury accessories. And pens were no exception. Nowadays dozens of companies produce fine writing instruments that range in cost from $150 to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

To choose yours, first decide whether you're a fountain pen, roll-ball, or ballpoint person. Then research the companies--some make purposely simple and understated designs, while others view the pen as jewelry, shaping them like animals or encrusting them with gems.

We can't guarantee that having a luxury pen will suddenly make your writing more interesting, but it'll definitely add gravitas to signing a credit card receipt.
