Another Coupon Competitor for Newspapers - Radio

NEWSPAPER CAN NOW expect to contend with another coupon competitor - radio.

New York-based entrepreneur, David Alwadish, is getting ready to test his Coupon Radio in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. Coupon Radio is actually (predominantly) a car radio with a built-in device, which employs radio data system (RDS) technology. With this radio installed, and "smart card" in hand, listeners can capture and store information transmitted over the airwaves on the smart card, and "redeem" their smart card/coupon at participating retailers.

With the advent of L-Band digital radio technology in Canada, Coupon-Radio is also grabbing international at attention there. In a presentation given at this year's Canadian Coupon Forum, Duff Roman, vice president of industry affairs for Chum Limited and vice chair of Digital Radio Research Inc., mentioned CouponRadio while discussing new, potential services made possible by digital radio.

Once digital radio takes off in Canada, Roman suggested CouponRadio as a way for radio stations to acquire new revenue and database opportunities, as well as a way to give advertisers measurable results.
