UPDATED: 'Wash Post' National Editor Susan Glasser Confirms Job Change in Memo

Susan B. Glasser, assistant managing editor for national news at The Washington Post, is being removed from her job, according to The New York Times, which claimed her ouster was due to "poor morale among her subordinates."

Glasser, in a memo to staffers, confirmed the move, but said only that she was departing from her current job. "I'm leaving to work on a new project with Don Graham but will continue to watch what happens here with great admiration and support," the memo, first posted on Politico.com, stated in part.

The Times earlier Tuesday stated: "Ms. Glasser was told on Monday night by the executive editor, Leonard Downie Jr., that she was being removed."

Calls to Downie and Glasser by E&P were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.

Glasser joined The Post in 1998 as deputy editor for investigations after serving as editor of Roll Call, the Times reported. She then served for nearly four years as co-bureau chief in Moscow with her husband, Post reporter Peter Baker, and was a correspondent in Iraq and Afghanistan. "When she was named an assistant managing editor in November 2006, Ms. Glasser was praised by Mr. Downie as 'one of our most talented and visionary journalists,' one whose 'transforming journalistic vision' would lead the 75-member national staff 'at a time of great opportunity and challenge,'" the Times reported.

"But morale suffered under Ms. Glasser's leadership, to the extent that in recent weeks a high-ranking Post editor surveyed people on the national staff to gauge just how bad feelings were running," the Times wrote. "The morale report was conveyed recently to Mr. …
