H.W. Wilson Releases New Abstracts Database for Education

Article excerpt

H.W. Wilson has announced the launch of Wilson Education Abstracts, a bibliographic reference database for academic libraries and other institutions involved in furthering education. Designed for use by students, educators, researchers, counselors, administrators, parents, and others close to the field, Wilson Education Abstracts provides information from 400 select periodicals, yearbooks, monographic series and books internationally, through abstracting (starting with publications from August 1994) and indexing (as far back as June 1983). The database is available on CD-ROM, magnetic tape, or online for DOS or Macintosh platforms, updated monthly on disc or tape and twice-weekly online. CD-ROM users are offered a free 90-day trial of the database.

Sixteen key areas of education are covered by Wilson Education Abstracts, including audiovisual education, comparative education, educational technology, language and linguistics, multicultural/ethnic education, social sciences, student counseling, teacher/parent relations, classroom computers, competency-based education, government funding, literacy standards, science and mathematics, special education, teacher education, and vocational education.

All levels of education are covered: preschool, elementary, secondary, undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education.

The new database is also distinguished by a cover-to-cover approach to indexing and abstracting of publications; full 50-to-150-word abstracts, convenient as references sources in themselves and designed to provide enough information to easily determine whether articles meet research needs; time-saving search options, including keyword, controlled vocabulary, and abstract word searches; monthly updates on disc and tape, supplemented by twice-weekly updates available online; citations included for education-related legal cases; online updates available to CD-ROM and magnetic tape subscribers; and full bibliographic data for each entry. …
