What is it that makes people wary of consultants?

Often, consultants are viewed with suspicion by many of those they are commissioned to help. There's a fear that they'll march in, spoon out a dose of nasty medicine and then vanish, leaving others to pick up the pieces ... Oh, and a hefty bill.

The reality is very different. Independent research conducted earlier this year by the Management Consultancies Association (MCA) and PMP showed that 92% of clients say they are impressed by the overall quality of work done by consulting firms.

Management consultancy is an increasingly important industry for the UK economy, with revenues of about pounds 8bn. And with the economy entering choppy waters, the role of consultants in helping business - and government - steer through them becomes even more critical.

There is always pressure on consultants to demonstrate value for money That's only right and proper, and the case studies that follow illustrate the huge return on investment that private- and public-sector organisations enjoy as a result of working with consultants.

Members of the MCA represent about 70% of the UK consulting sector and employ about 30,000 consultants. …
