Beginnings are a special, reflective time. A time of vision, ambition and new determination. Beginnings are moments to be savored, remembered and used later as a gauge for evaluating your progress. As I begin my term as NRPA President, I savor this beginning and I look forward to our progress together.

I am honored and humbled by the fact that I will be representing all of you professional and citizen members of NRPA who are dedicated to parks, recreation and conservation.

Sometimes as you look to the future, it is important to first see where you came from. I can reflect back over my career in parks and recreation and clearly see what brought me here in the first place. As I was growing up, I participated in recreational pursuits of my own. I can see how these programs impacted the lives of those of us who participated. The special relationship between a young person and a recreation leader, coach or arts programmer. The joy of teammates working together and accomplishing a mutual goal. The self confidence that comes from meeting your own challenges head-on and succeeding. The positive social skills that come from playing, working, creating, and interacting with your peers. The development of strong and resilient characters. All of these things happen in parks and recreation facilities across the country every day, through the dedication of many, and I wanted to be a part of that.

Now, as President of NRPA, I have an even bigger opportunity to be part of that. …
