'Sonoma (Calif.) Index-Tribune' Launches Paperless Edition

In order to reduce its paper and energy consumption, the twice-weekly Sonoma (Calif.) Index-Tribune will undergo what it is calling a full-scale conversion to a new "hybrid news medium" model over the next six to 12 months.

In addition to delivering its traditional print edition to local homes, The 129-year-old, family-owned-and-operated community newspaper is now offered via subscription online in an improved high-res, user-friendly format -- its paperless "SmartEdition" produced in partnership with NewspaperDirect.

"We already use recycled newsprint and soy-based ink and recycle every bit of waste we can," said Index-Tribune publisher Bill Lynch. "We cut back on the number of sections and pages we print and deliver by more than 30%. But the most important change, the one that can really make a difference, is getting our readers to join us in the biggest green revolution in the history of newspapers -- going paperless."

The digital edition, accessible via the Index-Tribune's Web site, sonomanews.com, is produced with the help of NewspaperDirect, which already creates paperless edtions for The Washington Post, New York Post, The Daily Telegraph, The Times and Daily Mail in England, and France's Le Figaro. …
