"I started playing drums when I was nine, a year before I got my first guitar," says Mimi Fox, explaining her aggressive, rhythmic approach to straight-ahead jazz. "Having an awareness of what's happening rhythmically and percussively has been a big advantage. It helps me hear a groove and phrase over the bar lines. When I compose, I often work out a feel at the kit. Once I have a part I like, communicating it to a drummer is a breeze."

Turtle Logic, Mimi's new release on Monarch Records [Box 51521, Palo Alto, CA 94303], features strong support from bassist Bill Douglass, drummer Scott Morris, and pianist Susan Muscarella. Fox turns the standards "My Romance," "Gentle Rain," and "Night And Day" inside out with her melodic sensitivity and blues-based earthiness, while her originals present sophisticated harmonies and cool contrasts.
