Article excerpt

Several discs of interest to academic libraries have been released recently. They fill very diverse needs, as you'll see:

New Masterplots Disc

Masterplots Definitive Revised Edition Nonfiction, Poetry and Drama CD-ROM has been added to the popular Masterplots series of discs. It features the valuable information found in the print volumes (published by Salem Press) in a convenient, keyword-searchable format.

Masterplots Definitive Revised Edition Nonfiction, Poetry and Drama CD-ROM is composed of over 1,000 essays conveying theme, style, plot, and characters, as well as companion works that focus on major characters and authors. Hypertext links allow for quick access to related essays and author biographies.

Users can search all fields for one keyword, or they can isolate their search to one or more specific fields such as author, subject, genre, and locale. Students or patrons have the flexibility to construct specific searches of subject, title only, or locale and author. The timeless information in this Masterplots CD-ROM is conveniently contained on a single disc. The material is well suited for high-school-level literature curricula and can be a valuable reference tool for college students and adults. And there is no additional charge for networking within a building.

Nursing Students' Journal Reference Library on CD-ROM

RNdex Student Edition was recently introduced at the National Student Nurses' Association (NASA) Mid-Year Conference in Los Angeles. Published in cooperation with the NASA, RNdex Student Edition is a new teaching and learning tool on CD-ROM.

Over 30,000 records from January 1992 to the present are organized so that a broad range of clinical, classroom, or research topics can be investigated quickly by even a novice computer user.

Commenting on the introduction of the student version, Elaine Graham, MLS, general manager of the SilverPlatter Information Resources Group (IRG), said, "Our intention with this product is to provide convenient, affordable, easy access to the nursing literature directly to the user. With RNdex Student Edition on your computer, you no longer have to worry about what the library hours are, wait for expert help, or pay by the minute to look for information."

RNdex Student Edition's publication schedule, pricing, and user support are designed especially for nursing students. …
