The Reno Fix on Kids, Sex and Satanism

Article excerpt

There is no justice at the Justice Department, but there is plenty of politics. Attorney General Janet Reno has refused Washington Gov. Mike Lowry's request to investigate the "child sex abuse" witch-hunt in Wenatchee, Wash. The request met with a chilly reception from Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hangs out with people who believe that 75 percent of parents sexually abuse their children. By this reckoning, at least 75 percent of those railroaded in Wenatchee are guilty -- even if framed.

Wenatchee has been terrorized by escalating child-sex-crime accusations ever since remiss public officials permitted an unqualified police investigator and corrupt Child Protective Services workers to run amok and unearth enough sex crimes in this small town to meet the annual quota for the entire country.

The child-sex-ring fantasy fell apart last December when a jury threw out charges against a local minister and his wife. The minister was charged with leading ritualistic orgies in his church in which members of the congregation were alleged to have participated in mass rapes of children, including the minister's 4-year-old daughter.

You might think such a fantastic case would need a lot of evidence and witnesses. But not in Wenatchee. The one adult witness was a convicted child rapist who was induced to testify against the minister in return for having his own first-degree rape counts reduced to misdemeanors. In other words, a real rapist was let off in order to frame an innocent man.

The other witness was the child ward of the investigator. She testified that her foster father had twisted her arm and thrown her to the floor. In his testimony, the detective denied that these actions constituted pressure on the child to testify against the minister.

By the time the case went to trial, 40 adults had been arrested. Residents began to realize no one was safe from false charges and the jury signaled enough was enough. But a dozen or so people remain locked away who were told they would be put in prison for life and never see their children again if they failed to enter a guilty plea.

This is coercion that violates every meaning of our constitutional civil rights. But in today's Justice Department there are only two kinds of civil-rights violations -- race and gender discrimination. The rights upon which our liberty depends have been discarded -- as evidenced by Reno's abandonment of the railroaded parents in Wenatchee.
