The next time you're reading a PDF online, someone may be watching you. While this may sound a bit Orwellian, Vitrium Systems, Inc. developed a way to track the eyeballs and reading habits of people who read PDFs. In fact, Gartner, Inc. named Vitrium Systems' Docmetrics technology as one of its Gartner Cool Vendors in CRM Marketing and Analytics, 2008.

"This technology is great news for publishers who want to find out more about who's reading their content," says Peter Nieforth, CEO of the Vancouver-based company. The patented technology in the web-based Docmetrics can transform standard PDFs into "smart documents." Content providers can easily maximize the value of their content, whether it's white papers, case studies, data sheets, and other electronic marketing documents.

The metrics on user engagement are gathered on multiple levels. Nieforth says that forms and surveys can be embedded within an enhanced PDF "that collects rich data about your readers that was not readily available before." Forms will appear superimposed over a page of content with an obscured layer. Once the form is completed and the questions are answered, the obscured layer disappears and the underlying content is revealed. Questions on the form can be answered using fill-ins or drop-down menu lists to gather data on the reader, company name, title, and so forth. The customizable forms can also be distributed throughout the document so the reader can fill out a brief series of questions quickly and continue reading. …
